Pittsburgh Then and Now

Pittsburgh Then and Now portrays the city through 161 pairs of matching photographs in a unique rephotographic survey. For each location, an archival image was culled from old books, municipal records, or library collections, and then rephotographed in the late 1980s from the same camera position. From eclectic turn-of-the-century architecture to modernist and postmodernist buildings; from steel mills to high-technology centers; from horse to streetcar to automobile—each pair of photographs reflects how the the city has  been reinvented, and what has remained the same. Pittsburgh Then and Now is a treasury of photographic images for those who remember the old Pittsburgh, those who are curious about its past, and anyone interested in the evolution of a city.
