The Frick Museum Store
The Frick Museum Store, once tucked away in the Frick children’s Playhouse, is a focus within the Grable Visitor Center of The Frick Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh. Opened in July 2014, the Frick Museum Store is vastly different than its former shop counterpart and complements the building’s design with an open layout and streamlined fixtures. A fresh, new collection of items focuses on products that offer a more cohesive snapshot of all of the different features of the site. Selections include an array of Frick exclusives, many of which act as remembrances of each visitor’s unique museum experience. Other highlights of the Store include carefully selected fine decorative and functional items for the home perfect for personal enjoyment or gift-giving. The children’s section features high-quality, unique products and activities for kids of all ages focusing on art, transportation, the outdoors, and toys from the Victorian era. With a built-in jewelry counter, the Store now provides a dedicated space to shine a spotlight on distinctive jewelry designed and handcrafted by local and international artists. Selections will change throughout the year, granting visitors an opportunity to peruse seasonal and site-specific wearable art, in addition to being able to learn about each new artist and their techniques through story cards and helpful, educated sales staff. As well as a continued emphasis on exhibition-specific products, the store carries a diverse selection of books. Experience Pittsburgh’s Gilded Age at The Frick Pittsburgh, a museum located on five acres of beautifully landscaped lawns and gardens in the city’s historic East End. Here, visitors can tour Clayton, the meticulously restored home of the Henry Clay Frick family, experience our permanent collection and changing exhibitions, learn about Gilded Age history, and participate in a wide array of programs. The Frick’s collection spans a wide range from early Renaissance paintings to cars and carriages, clothing, furniture, and even the historic buildings themselves. Special exhibitions are presented year-round at The Frick Art Museum and interpretive programs are provided for all ages. The Frick Pittsburgh is open to the public thanks to the generosity of Helen Clay Frick, daughter of Henry Clay Frick. When the Frick family moved to New York in 1905, Helen remained attached to Clayton, her Pittsburgh home. Her long-time wish was for Clayton and the surrounding estate to be preserved and opened to the public after her death. In 1970, Helen had The Frick Art Museum constructed to allow public enjoyment of her art collection. Miss Frick returned to Pittsburgh in 1981 and lived at Clayton until her death in 1984. Although Miss Frick had carefully maintained Clayton, complete restoration of the home prior to opening it as a house museum was a four-year project. Open to the public in 1990, Clayton now welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year and provides them with an intimate glimpse into the life of the Frick family a century ago.
The Center has continued to grow in the years following Clayton’s opening. In 1994, The Café at The Frick opened, offering both award-winning cuisine and a panoramic view of the grounds. The Car and Carriage Museum, built in 1997, expanded the original Carriage Museum which housed the Frick family’s vehicles. The Car and Carriage Museum presents not only the Frick family’s personal collection of cars and carriages, but also interweaves the history of the automobile with that of western Pennsylvania’s early auto enthusiasts and manufacturers. It also contains many vehicles from the collection of Pittsburgh industrialist G. Whitney Snyder.
