The most famous of the Impressionist artists, Claude Monet is known for his light-filled landscapes and spontaneous brushwork. This canvas was painted when Monet and his family were living at Vétheuil, a suburb to the northwest of Paris on the Seine. monet painted a number of views looking across the river at Lavacourt on the opposite side. Henry Clay Frick purchased this painted in 1901 and it typically hangs in the sitting room at Clayton.
